Celebrating 179 Years of Service: Changing Lives of Children and Building Brighter Futures.
Make Your Mark and Be a Part of the Change!
Established on May 10, 1845, Elmcrest Children’s Center has a rich history rooted in changing the lives of children in need and building brighter futures. Originating as the Syracuse Orphans’ Asylum, it evolved over 179 years to adapt to changing societal needs, ultimately becoming Elmcrest Children’s Center in 1845.
Originally focused on orphan care, Elmcrest shifted its mission to serve troubled youth in the 1960s, later expanding to cater to children with emotional, behavioral, and developmental challenges. Today, Elmcrest offers a wide range of services, including residential treatment, education, respite care, and early education programs, impacting over 2,800 children annually. Our legacy of innovation and leadership in Central New York’s child welfare landscape invites further exploration of our transformative journey.

Learn More About Elmcrest Programs and Services
Elmcrest’s programs and services extend a lifeline to vulnerable children and families facing daunting challenges. Through both residential and community-based initiatives, we ignite a flame of hope in the hearts of those who need it most. Our efforts are not just about providing temporary relief; they are about instilling a sense of possibility and resilience in every child we serve. From nurturing educational opportunities to fostering character strengths and social skills, we pave the way for a brighter future.
Mental Health Respite Program
Since its opening in March 2023, our Children’s Mental Health Crisis Respite Programs have provided assistance to 142 children and teens, with some opting for multiple stays, resulting in a collective total of 167 stays. These numbers reflect the pressing need for such services within our community.
Our commitment to supporting youth facing mental health challenges remains steadfast. The need for mental health services is growing. We plan to open a second Children’s Mental Health Crisis Respite center on our campus to bridge the gap in mental health services for our most vulnerable population.
“The Elmcrest staff was warm and welcoming, very involved, and focused on assisting my son in any way possible. In many ways, the staff went above and beyond what he previously experienced during a mental health crisis. He was even able to attend his regular school and sports while at Elmcrest. This was easily one of the most traumatic experiences we have weathered together as a family, but we came out of this relieved that our ONLY option was not just straight to another emergency room or hospital setting. Elmcrest is setting the bar for high quality mental health care in Central New York. The children in our community need this resource now more than ever.” – Struse Family
