Elmcrest Children’s Center has been awarded a 2026 Literacy Champion Grant from the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County, supporting an exciting new summer initiative: Literacy & History in Motion

This recognition places Elmcrest among 18 organizations selected to receive funding through a $100,000 community investment aimed at strengthening literacy and expanding access to educational opportunities across Onondaga County.

A Moment Worth Celebrating

The award was presented at the Literacy Coalition’s annual Champion Breakfast, where Elmcrest CEO Diane Nappa and Agency Development Officer Helen Kelley proudly accepted the grant on behalf of the organization.

It was a powerful moment, one that reflects not just recognition, but trust in the work Elmcrest does every day to support children and families.

Bringing Literacy to Life

So what makes Literacy & History in Motion special?

This six-week summer literacy camp is designed for residential youth and goes far beyond traditional reading programs. It blends literacy development with history, creativity, and real-world experiences—making learning both meaningful and memorable.

Participants will:

  • Step into the stories of historical figures
  • Connect with professional authors
  • Explore museums and cultural institutions
  • Build reading and writing skills through hands-on activities
  • Showcase their learning in a live Wax Museum presentation

This is literacy in action, dynamic, engaging, and rooted in discovery.

Why It Matters

“This program is designed to make literacy come alive for our youth,” said [Insert Name/Title].
“By connecting reading and writing with history and creativity, we’re helping young people build skills, confidence, and a deeper appreciation for learning.”

At Elmcrest, we know literacy is more than just reading—it’s a foundation for confidence, communication, and lifelong success. Programs like this give young people the tools they need not only to learn, but to thrive.

A Shared Commitment to Literacy

The Literacy Champion Grants program supports innovative efforts that promote literacy across all ages—from early childhood through adulthood. We are proud to partner with the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County in this shared mission.

Together, we’re helping ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow, learn, and succeed.
