Elmcrest Expands it's Family Support Services Program Upon Request of Cortland County

The Family Support Center (FSC) in Syracuse is a transitional residence for children entering and moving through the foster care system in Onondaga County. It is a collaborative effort between Onondaga County Department of Social Services and Elmcrest. Children are expected to stay at FSC for 14 days.

FSC serves up to 14 males and females from up to 18 years old. The goals of the Family Support Center are to:

Reduce the trauma commonly associated with being removed from home.

Reunite children with their biological families whenever possible.

Reduce the time children spend in foster care.

We accomplish our goals by providing a safe and nurturing environment for families to have immediate and frequent visitation with their children, ensuring that each child attends their home school, and by bringing the family together to plan for a permanent plan for the child.

The Family Support Program (FSP) in Cortland is designed to meet the same goals as the Family Support Center in a smaller community. The Cortland County Family Support Services program expanded effective 1-1-16 to include parent aide, parent training and foster care visitation services.Foster children served through FSP reside in Cortland County foster homes. They visit frequently with their families in family friendly space in our Cortland Office or at other places in the community. FSP decreases the amount of time it takes to safely return children home and prevent their return to foster care.

The Family Support Program provides ongoing evaluation and assessment of the family’s strengths and needs, provides trauma-sensitive care and treatment, family meetings, solution focused therapy and frequent family visits all with the goal of achieving permanency and stability as quickly as possible.
