Foster Care

Right now you have the power to say, "I will not let their story end like this."

In 2016 there were over 350 children and youth in foster care in Onondaga County. Foster care is a temporary living situation for children who have been removed from their home for many reasons, including emotional, physical, or sexual abuse; neglect or maltreatment; substance abuse; domestic violence; medical, physical, or mental health needs; or insufficient family or community support.

These children are in desperate need of homes to be nurtured, encouraged, and loved until they can either return to their birth parent or identify an alternative permanent home.

For over 150 years, Elmcrest has been providing various supportive services for children in foster care. We have seen firsthand the consequences of not having enough foster care homes:

  • Siblings are separated
  • Problematic behavioral and mental health concerns increase
  • Length of stay increases on average six months
  • Maltreatment increases
  • Expenses increase
  • Congregate care increases for kids who should be in family care

In order to prevent further disruption in a child or youth's life, Elmcrest has created a Therapeutic Foster Care Program.
